A reminder to live for yourself rather than the expectations of others

No rent, no shame

You do not owe anyone anything.

You do not have to pay rent in this world simply for existing.

You do not need to feel shame.

If you are a woman, you do not owe your body. You do not owe the sight of your flesh. You do not owe the way you walk down the street, or the way you dance, or the way speak.

You do not owe cat-callers a response, or gratitude for their so-called 'compliments.'

If you are betrayed, you do not owe trust. Not until people prove themselves worthy, and even then, not until you want to.

If you are disrespected, you do not owe respect. Not until people show they deserve it, and only if you are prepared to give it.

If you are queer, you do not owe your coming out. You do not owe your story, your sexuality, or your explanations.

If you are trans, you do not owe justification or proof of your gender identity. You do not owe an explanation for the way you dress, or the way you act, or the bathroom you choose to use.

It's easy to forget this. It's easy to think you owe explanations, and behaviours, and a certain way of living your life. It's easy to feel ashamed.

Because that's what society tries to convince you; that you owe rent, and that you owe shame.

But you do not have to be anything other than authentically and un-apologetically yourself. People have no right to force an identity on you that is not your own.

They have no right to tell you what to think, what to believe, who to love, what love is, what hate is, and who you are.

Because you do not owe anyone anything.

You do not have to pay rent in this world simply for existing.

You do not need to feel shame.
