Dear Gen Z

Generation Z.

We are a generation that grew up with technology all around us. the ones who constantly are online, but that is not all there is to us. We aren’t what you perceive us to be.

We are the heroes you read about in books, see in movies and hear about in songs. We are the teenagers that are destined to save the world and it’s scaring us shitless.

You call us lazy, unmotivated, entitled and obsessed with the internet. We call ourselves hard-working, motivated, realistic and aware.

We are a generation that has endless information at our fingertips and that is constantly learning and evolving.

We open our minds and talk to people, even if they happen to be from a different continent. We know that most of them aren’t old creepy men or women, they are teenagers like us.

No matter what skin color, nationality, history, sexuality they are, we still see humans and that is one of the most important traits we have.

Because of how open the internet has made us we manage to look through the small window the media has set forward to us.

We look past the big lips, expensive clothes and cash and we see the global warming, the unfairness and the horrible things happening in this world. We aren’t dumb.

We see what’s happening in our world and we desperately want to fix it.

But how? Most of us are still children, even though the media has already started to blame us for things “dying out”. Sorry, not sorry Facebook.

They say we vote less, have less sex, drink less, drive less.

I’m sorry Carol but most of us aren’t even old enough to drive a car, let alone vote, but we all know if we had been doing those things, then it would be wrong too.

We are seen as depressed and anxious. Truth is we are. Our minds are flooded 24/7 with all that is going on. We know that we are going to struggle.

Work is harder to get and student loans are even worse. We try and we try.

No matter how many A’s you get, sports you play or how nice you are, somebody better still might be there and take that scholarship you had dreamed of, But that’s how life is for us.

Well, It must be the goddamned Iphones that’s making us depressed, right?

Kids are murdered in school. A place supposed to be safe. A place to learn and grow and other shit. Well not anymore.

Now school is a place filled with way too many fire drills, each one making your heart jump while you pretend to be calm. Making you pray inside your head to a god you might not even believe in.

“Please not now, not today”

All because some idiot sitting in a big white house refuse to take away the AR-15 that murdered your friend, your sister, your brother or your child.

But don’t worry though, his thoughts and prayers are with you.

Do you see it yet?

It’s taken straight out from a novel. The government is watching innocent kids die, the world is falling apart at the seams, and who is the chosen ones?

The kids.

The kids who still watch vines even though it stopped years ago, the kids who call their best friends bitch for taking the cookie they REALLY wanted,

the kids who take selfies when we think we look good and the kids who use the middle finger as “hey” and has the most obscure humor known to man.

They say we need to speak up? Honey we are screaming.
