People, especially from the politically correct crowd, harps on how there are very few "strong" women in pop culture. However, from what I've seen, there are quite a few "strong" female characters in books, movies & TV shows, as I believe I show in my list. One thing about this list: I debated whether or not to include the character Hit Girl (from the graphic novels & movies Kick Ass) since she is younger than the other characters I listed, but I went ahead and included her since she WAS so-dare I say it!-kick ass.

My Favorite Kick Ass Women From The Nineties On (From Books, Movies & TV)

by tbanarchy

MERCY THOMPSON

From the "urban fantasy" books written by author Patricia Briggs, Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a shapeshifting coyote mechanic who is the "mate" of Alpha male wolf Adam Hauptman.

JILL KISMET

From the "urban fantasy" novels written by Lilith Saintcrow, Jill Kismet is a psychic and demon hunter who hunts "hellbreed" with the help of her "mate" Saul Dustcircle who's a were-cougar.

CASSIE HACK

Cassie Hack is the "heroine" of the Hack/Slash graphic novels. Cassie hunts "slashers" which are zombie-esque serial killers with the help of her "deformed" companion Vlad who looks like Jason.

BLACK SCORPION

Black Scorpion was first a movie-and its sequel-from B-movie director Roger Corman and then became a TV series on the then-Sci-Fi channel. BS is like a female Batman with a Batmobile-like car.

BOMB QUEEN

From the graphic novels by Jimmie Robinson, Bomb Queen is a scantily-clad super-villainess & the defacto leader of New Port City, a haven for criminals where anything-and I mean ANYTHING-goes.

WYNONNA EARP

Wynonna Earp the TV show on the Sy-Fy channel started off as comics/graphic novels. She plays a descendant of Wyatt Earp (yes, THAT WE!) who hunts down demons with her big-ass demon-killing gun.

DUTCH FROM KILLJOYS

Another show on the Sy-Fy channel, Dutch is the head "Killjoy" which is an intergalactic bounty hunter along with two brothers Davin & Johnny & a ship named Lucy. Dutch is also a former assassin.

DORINA (OR DORY) BASARAB

From the "urban fantasy" novels by Karen Chance, Dorina Basarab is a damphir, a half-human/half-vampire. Dory has a thing for a master vampire named Louis-Cesare. Her uncle is also Dracula.

PADME AMIDALA FROM THE STAR WARS PREQUELS

Padme took some guff from some Star Wars fans, one of whom saying she was a "useless" character. Except that she gave birth to Luke & Leia. Plus she kicked ass at the battle on Geonosis in EP II.

MYSTIQUE FROM THE X-MEN MOVIES

Mystique is the mutant blue-skinned assassin who sometimes joins forces with the head bad guy mutant Magneto. In the movies, she is portrayed by both Rebecca Romjin and Jennifer Lawrence.

MILLA JOVOVICH IN RESIDENT EVIL (ALL OF THEM)

Let's face it, without Milla Jovovich the Resident Evil films-based on the popular video game-would have been nowhere near as successful. In fact, without Milla there would be NO franchise.

MILLA JOVOVICH IN THE FIFTH ELEMENT

The movie The Fifth Element-starring Bruce Willis-has gone on to become a "cult" classic. That's largely due to Milla Jovovich's popular character Leeloo. (Of course, I'm sure the outfit helped!)

MILLA JOVOVICH IN ULTRAVIOLET

Though not as popular as The Fifth Element or her Resident Evil films, Milla Jovovich STILL kicked as much ass in UV as she did the others. And, as in the other films, she looked GOOD doing it!

SOPHIE MARCEAU IN THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

Sophie Marceau-who's one of my favorite actresses-starred as the villain in this James Bond flick with Pierce Brosnan as 007. Sophie's character tortures Bond in that medieval torture device.

ELASTIGIRL FROM THE INCREDIBLES

Even though she's animated, I believe you CAN'T have a list of kick ass women without including Elastigirl from one of my favorite films of all-time, animated or otherwise, The Incredibles.

MICHELLE YEOH IN ANYTHING

Whether it's a martial arts film or being a Bond "girl" or playing a superhero, Michelle Yeoh has proven time & again she can kick as MUCH ass as the guys and THEN some! Jackie Chan, take note!

CYNTHIA ROTHROCK IN ANYTHING

Cynthia Rothrock is a bonafide martial artist who won several tournaments before starring in action films like China O'Brien & Lady Dragon throughout the nineties. Steven Seagal, take note!

PETA WILSON IN LA FEMME NIKITA

La Femme Nikita is a TV show in the nineties based on the French action film starring Anne Parillaud. It starred Peta Wilson as Nikita who is a woman "forced" to become a government asssassin.

MAGGIE Q IN NIKITA

Nikita was another TV reboot of La Femme Nikita, this one starring actress Maggie Q as Nikita. In this show, Nikita is seeking revenge against the "secret" outfit that trained her to be a killer.

ANNA LATHAM CORNICK

From the "urban fantasy" books also written by Patricia Briggs, Anna Latham is an "Omega" wolf who is the mate of Alpha wolf Charles Cornick who belongs to the same wolf pack as Mercy Thompson.

THE WIDOW FROM INTO THE BADLANDS

The Widow is a character from the AMC karate show Into The Badlands (yes, The Walking Dead channel!). She's a ruthless "baron" who trains other women to fight. An added bonus is she's a redhead!

HIT GIRL FROM KICK ASS

Though younger than the others, the character Hit Girl from the graphic novels & the films have shown she can be JUST as, uh, kick ass as her older counterparts. Still waiting for the HG film!

DIANE LANE IN UNTRACEABLE

This is the only action flick I've seen Diane Lane star in. Although Untraceable wasn't a big hit, I would still like to see Diane, who's one of my favorite actresses, in more of these films.
