He smiled as he opened the door trying to make as little noise as possible. He didn't want to wake his daughters.
He walked into the living room and switched on the light. The sight that greeted him made his eyes tear up.

My Hero

The date was 31st January 2001; the time, 5:15 a.m. One man paced back and forth infront of a room in an empty corridor. Inside the room, a woman could be heard screaming.

With every scream, with every passing minute he was getting more and more nervous.

"What if something goes wrong? ", he thought. Shaking his head he tried to get rid of all the bad thoughts. Suddenly the screams stopped and complete silence overtook the empty corridor.

He looked nervously towards the closed door infront of him when suddenly the cries of a baby was heard. He collapsed down on the chair letting go of the breath he didn't know he was holding.

A nurse came out of the room holding a bundle of blanket. He stood up and took the bundle from her. Inside the blanket was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen : his daughter.

All the nervousness, panic and anxiety he had been feeling was suddenly replaced by happiness and joy. He had become a father.

All the nervousness, panic and anxiety he had been feeling was suddenly replaced by happiness and joy. He had become a father.

Fifteen years later....

The road was dark, empty and silent. From the opposite side of the road, a man hurried out of a building.

He was in his early fifties, dressed in plain clothes, a worn out pair of shoes and a cap. He paused at the bus stop hoping the bus would still be running even though it was very late.

After a few minutes it was clear that no bus would be coming. He'd have to walk back home again.

It had been a month since he started working at this place. The place he worked before had shut down five years back. Since then he had been trying to find jobs but had been unsuccessful.

During these last five years,

he and his wife worked many temporary jobs to earn for their family of four but even then many compromises had to be made and financial difficulties was always present.

They had made sure their daughters' school bills were paid on time and that they never had to sleep on an empty stomach.

His wife had sold every piece of jewelry she owned during last five years to keep the family going. He himself was always on the move trying to get a job.

Looking back at the things that had happened since he had lost his job, he felt thankful as well as sorry for his family.

It was his responsibility as the head of the family to take care of them but he had failed. His family had always been supportive but disappointed was evident in their eyes.

They felt the gods had failed them and he himself could not bring himself to counter that.

He thought that maybe if he blamed things other than himself the guilt would reduce a tiny bit, just a tiny bit.

He had almost reached his home after a forty five minutes walk. He smiled as he opened the door trying to make as little noise as possible. He didn't want to wake his daughters.

He walked into the living room and switched on the light. The sight that greeted him made his eyes tear up.

The room was decorated with pictures of him, his daughters and the entire family. His wife and two daughters were seated on the floor.

On the table, there was a chocolate cake with the words "Happy Father's Day " written on it.

His younger daughter got up from where she was sitting and pulled him towards the table. His daughters started singing "Happy Father's Day" totally off tune making him and his wife laugh.

He cut the cake and after everyone had a piece, his elder daughter handed him a letter.

It was midnight. He sat on his bed with the letter still in his hands. The weather outside was changing. The sky was cloudy and he could hear thunders. Tonight it was going to rain heavily.

Pulling his blanket up, he slowly opened the letter and read.

Dear dad,

Thank you for being our dad.

Thank you for never giving up.

Thank you for always loving us.

Thank you for always supporting us.

As I sat down to write this letter, I realized that I haven't really told you how much I appreciate you and how much I'm thankful that you're my dad. I'm sorry for that, dad.

I'm what I am today because of you. You always supported me and never let anything hold me back.

Even in difficult situation, you did what you could to ensure we didn't have to skip school or our meals.

Even though things were difficult for you, you always put up a smiling face. You never let us feel the extreme pressure and stress you always had to carry.

Dad, I'm sure things will be better now. We have passed the most difficult time and now everything will be alright. We will always be there for you just like how you've always been there for us.

So please don't take too much stress. Please take care of your health and yourself now dad. You are very important to us.

You are our hero, dad. Once again we wish you a very Happy Father's Day. Thank you for everything you've done for us. We are proud of you and we promise to make you proud one day.

We love you dad!!

With lots of love,

Your daughters
