,.....Old One Eye is a good mechanic,....and he can drive the Hell out of anything on wheel's,....

Old One Eye,..two pack's of Marlboro's,.....& a Six Pack to go,.......

written by that Old Hippie near Dundee , Texas,.....

,.......There was nothing better than a weekend trip to Eliasville Texas,....The river was the best place to stay cool during the hotter part's of July,....Tall cottonwood ,..

and oak tree's lined the north part of this section of the Brazo's River,.....South Bend was also a pleasant place to rest when we traveled through that part of the county, ....

The hot summer day's seemed to drift on by , when we stayed at the cabin over there for a while........

The Kuntry Gurrl's would be staying home on this trip, and they were mad, all kind's of mad ,....about not being able to go with me on that particular business trip......

I promised to bring them some real corn liquor, from old Shady Slim's place , down near Bunger Texas,....

that kind of cooled their temperament a little , then I told the Kuntry Gurrl's I would bring back some wildwood weed, the kind that make's them giggle , laugh,

and want to have sex all night,...........but they still threw a few rock's at me as I drove away from their house in Town........anyhow.......

The road trip from my cabin in Shackleford County,....to the hiding place there near Eliasville Texas was a long one,.....

I wanted to take the shortest way possible, and the heavy traffic on the main highway was just too much for the old truck I was driving in,....

the pickup looked fairly good, rode rather well , but the truck was getting pretty old ,....

and I did not want to push my luck being on the same road with those faster driving people,....so I stayed on the farm to market road's, ....and the county road's all the way to Eliasville.

I was carrying over Four hundred pound's of pure cane sugar, in 25lb sack's, and twenty case's of one quart mason jar's in the bed of the old truck, .............

As a rule of thumb, We alway's bought the ingredient's to make corn liquor from outside of the county,....

to keep the Government people from being too nosey, and start looking for the place where the corn liquor was being made,...... .

the overload leaf spring's on the Ford pickup made it look to be riding level on the highway....

without the heavy duty suspension, the pickup would look like it was dragging it's rear bumper,........I took good care of the freshly rebuilt 390 cid V8 engine,....

it was taken out of an older model Ford Thunderbird several year's ago , I had kept the motor in my barn for a good while ,...

then me and Old One Eye re-worked and polished up the cylinder head's at his place,.....afterward's,...

we had sent the engine block & crankshaft to the machine shop's near Pasadena Texas for custom work to be done...... We had to wait a good while for the work to be finished ,...

after four week's we got the assembled engine delivered to my place here on the river, and proceeded to put it up in storage in my barn for the time being .....

We had an older Ford V8 engine in my barn that had Dual 4V- carburetor's , mounted on it ,...

so after soaking & cleaning them up , I found two fairly good Jiffy carburetor kit's up in the barn rafter's, near the hoard of boxes that I kept up there......

It took me three hour's to rebuild both of them, I installed the two carb's on the factory style intake manifold, using copper coat on the gasket's ,

in case I was going to have to remove them again. The Ford Auto-lite carburetor's fit the intake manifold perfectly , and there was plenty of room for a carb spacer if it was needed........

We set the intake manifold aside for the time being. Old One Eye went to the other side of our work area,...Then he unwrapped the freshly machined & assembled engine block.

Everything was looking to be in good order, new piston's, knife-edged crankshaft, the connecting rod's were the heavy duty Ford type, they were balanced & weighed,

just like the piston's were,....everything assembled in the Ford engine was a close match to each other , which made for a perfectly balanced engine,....

Old One Eye said The windage tray was a custom job,...he never saw one that was welded together so nice and pretty before . .........anyhow. We installed the engine the next day,....

taking our time , and working under no stress,.....it made the job a lot easier if you did not have to sweat & cuss at the same time..................

Old One Eye volunteered himself to be the test driver of the old truck after we got everything put back together,......He hopped inside the cab of the old truck,....

then He took the pickup along the river road all the way to the iron bridge,.....

then turning right to get to the highway, I could hear Old One Eye had put his right foot on the accelerator, standing on it was more was it sounded like,....

I could hear the dual exhaust of the pickup winding it's way through the gear's as Old One Eye was doing his best "A.J.

Foyt" driving impression, pretending to be behind the wheel of a Ford Torino Cobra ,.......He stayed on the highway for several mile's,....

then I could not hear the sound of the pickup any longer. I went to the barn to clean up a few thing's,..............

after about twenty or thirty minute's , I could hear Old One Eye coming back this way,.....he was driving down the back road's ,......

the rough and bumpy road that come's around the south side of the river.

With the old Ford pickup back in good shape again, I knew it would make the trip to Eliasville Texas, and back with no problem's.......

I watched as Old One Eye drove the pickup rather slowly ,.......up to the barn at his place....He smiled as he got out from behind the wheel of the Ford truck,.........

He looked at me ,...saying that the old truck was road ready ,...and road worthy as far as he was concerned,.......

he said that the transmission shifted nicely at 90 mph into direct drive,....

and there was no other vibration, or problem's that he could find when the pickup was driven past 100 mph,......

with all that work behind us, Me and Old One Eye decided to call it quits for the day,...

I guess I was ready to take the scenic route to Eliasville & Southbend Texas in a few more day's ,.......The drive to Shady Slim's place would be a bit more relaxing,....

now that the old pickup was back in shape again,..................
