My mother wore purple
My mother wore purple bruises, fresh-bloomed,
like the flowers
like the flowers he never bought her.
Like the ripe apologies
Like the ripe apologies that burst like grapes
Like the ripe apologies that burst like grapes from his lips.
She wore his touch
She wore his touch and called it passion.
She could not understand
She could not understand a love without bruises.
