I cannot pretend I have always lived. Exclusively by the truth.

My badges

by s0me0ne

I cannot pretend I have always lived.

Exclusively by the truth.

At times, the truth

Was sacrificed.

Out of circumstance.

So I have worn.

Those badges of dishonour -

Liar.

Untrustworthy

Unworthy.

- with heavy-hearted acceptance.

Again.

And again.

Till those badges have come to define me -

Liar.

Untrustworthy

Unworthy.

- but as a man I do not.

Truthfully.

Recognise.

For I have always strived for truth.

Yearned for a different set of circumstances

Where truth

Defined its very foundation

Rather than its absence

Defining me.

So when you say to me.

I believe you.

I trust you.

I like you.

My heart soars.

My sense of self

Is restored

Until.

It isn't.

When your actions

Belie your words.

Distrust.

A lack of belief.

And those badges come back to haunt me.

Liar.

Untrustworthy

Unworthy.

And my heart sinks again.

Is this my curse?

To always be forced.

To see myself.

As others see me.

As the man they think I am

Rather than the man I want to be.

The man I think I can be.

The man I think I am.

If truth.

Circumstances.

Would just once.

Allow it.
