"Are you listening to me?"
"Open your ears."
"Pay attention to what I'm saying."
"Do you need your ears cleaned?"
Yes, I can hear.
Yes, I'm listening.
But not to you.
I hear the tapping of an impatient foot as a child cries.
I hear the bristles of a brush as it makes it's mark on the world.
The clicking of a clock that has almost ticked it's last tock.
A basketball bouncing off of the neighbor's wall.
You hear words.
I hear music.
Sounds are more pleasing than meaningless words.
Words are harsh;
They cut through to your heart more than they were intended to.
Sounds are reliable;
They come from actions that show the truth.
Feelings can be expressed through sound too.
We take these clues for granted,
Relying on asking with words when we can simply hear.
You ask me if I'm listening?
Maybe you should ask yourself that.
