There are straight sequential breaks
in the sidewalk in front of my house,
where they are supposed to be.
This spring, weeds began an invasion:
(In Guatelmala there are hidden Mayan cities
overcome and defeated by jungle).
The neighbor to the left of me said
my sidewalk weediness
disgraced the neighborhood,
so I paid a man to come fix it,
to restore the breaks to civility.
He used a sharp straight blade,
a v-shaped blade like an ice-breaker
and a weed eater
whose string spun around so fast
he accidently sliced a gash
in his blue jeans and the skin of his shin.
I didn't ask the man to come back.
All of the weeds started to grow again.
They grew so big
they caused spider web cracks
in the walk,
like star cracks in a car windshield
after being chipped by a piece of gravel.
My neighbor didn't say anything.
I didn't know, but wondered
if he had a heart attack and died
in the middle of the night,
when I was so deeply asleep
I didn't hear the ambulance take him away.
the weeds became outrageously vampant.
I thought the approaching winter ice might
do the trick,
what would the expanding ice
do to the cracks?
