Jesus on Colfax

As I left my apartment building early this morning

A statue of a man stands on the corner of my street

next to a takeout Chinese restaurant

Tired and beaten down, he was

from cleansing the streets of sin and trust fund kids

His hair long and gray

His beard long and gray

His eyes vacant and holy

There were no shoes on his feet

The ground beneath him was a vast puddle of water

The air around him was forming cyclones

He was levitating

Walk-in clinics and liquor stores

sent their questions to him

delivered in silent prayer

and he spent all hours of sunlight

bearing the weight and holding the blame in his heart

When I arrived at my apartment later in the evening

He was still there, standing in the same spot with the same eyes

His arms outstretched toward the towering cathedral

and for the first time in my life

I believed that I would make it to heaven
