vertebrates like mammals are described as chordates with a backbone.
a nice description. strong, decisive.
backbone sounds sturdy.
i was nothing like that.
the early years i spent deep in the closet and desperate for normality.
i'd follow the cool girls around like a lovesick puppy, join in mobbing and stupid trends and attempt to hide my love for homework and learning.
vertebrates are chordates that have a backbone, and in high school i was more like a starfish, asymmetrical, with squiggly arms and a reversible stomach.
i like to think that over time, i grew. evolved. grew that missing backbone.
thinking back to those days still is painful and leaves me ashamed of who i was, which was nobody at all.
now i am somebody - myself -
and if that starfish could see me like this...
