Ten reasons why I write.

I Write

by reasonsofbeing

I Write

in hopes of tearing you apart, and if you’re lucky I might put you back together when I’m done.

I Write

to explain everything that happened to me, everything that didn’t, and everything that now never will.

I Write

because my friends get tired of hearing me complain that he broke my heart when he was never even my boyfriend, but somehow an “ex-almost” hurts just as much.

I Write

because I'm tired of complaining about being heart-broken, but it's hard to focus on anything else when you can still see the blood of your shattered heart dripping off your chest.

I Write

to free the birds flying through the never-ending expanse of my mind, nipping at my edges and begging to escape their iron bars.

I Write

because the pain I feel tearing my heart out and splattering it on a screen dims in comparison to the ache I feel when I’m done writing and realize I’m still alone.

I Write

because I’m tired of living in a world of miserable people telling other people not to be miserable, and I hope that I can take away some of that misery.

I Write

because it’s the only time I feel like I’m good at something.

I Write

because I don’t have to say “I’m okay.”

I Write

because when my eyes burn from staring at the screen or my fingers cramp from gripping my pencil tight, I feel stronger than ever before.

Author's note: This poem shared all the reasons why I write, but feel free to comment your personal reasons, I'd love to hear from other people! (:

@reasonsofbeing In fact, I think I'll go back and actually add "author's note" or something

@bernardtwindwil I'm immensely grateful for your kind words AND for your hardcore advice! As a writer, there's nothing more humbling as when someone else takes the time to help our work improve. And I completely agree that the last slide cheapens the affect of the (yes, 10 (: ) previous stanzas, and almost throws a painfully simplistic ending at the reader. If I were to every truly publish this, I would take those lines out. However, after sharing this poem the first time I actually went back and added those lines in because I realized that I actually want to know why other people write! So perhaps think of those lines as less of the ending, and more of an attached author's note. (: Thanks again!

This was a wonderful exploration into a tortured soul. It was beautifully written. The words in each stanza compelled the reader to take an empathetic view of you and your world. Now the hardcore advice. You spent 10 stanzas (yes I counted them) telling us why you write. So drop the phrase, "This is why I write." Why do you write?" You make it sound like the second day in a creative writing class. Who cares why the reader writes? That information does nothing for your plight. Dumb the writhing seething mass of your creativity into the reader's lap all raw and bloody. This was an exceptional work. Great job!!
