A short story about letting a homeless stranger know he matters through a small gesture of kindness.
(November 2019)

He Matters

It was a bitterly cold winter night and the wind was holwing. They walked into the ATM vestibule and discovered him lying there, covered with several coats and sweaters.

He was huddled against the heater. All his wordly possessions in a bag being used as a pillow. This was more for safe keeping, than comfort, she thought.

She wasn't sure there was life under that pile. There was no sound. No movement. He was so still and silent. Was he asleep? Or, was he just trying to be left alone? She couldn't tell.

She wasn't sure there was life under that pile. There was no sound. No movement. He was so still and silent. Was he asleep? Or, was he just trying to be invisible? She couldn't tell. Her young daughter was silent as they walked back to their truck. Her heart was full, not with pity, but with compassion.

Life is full of so many twists and turns, unexpected events and tragedies. Things beyond one's control.

Life is full of so many twists and turns, unexpected events and tragedies. Things beyond one's control. It could be her lying there trying to keep warm, hoping not to get kicked out to freeze to death. She could be the one always over looked by others ... invisible.

Once inside their warm truck, she looked at her daughter. So young and innocent, not understanding how this man could not have a place to go. All alone.

The disbelief and sadness welled up in her young eyes. This was not a common experience in their neighbourhood.

She started to drive and told her daughter that they needed to go to the local coffee shop to buy a hot coffee and food for this man.

She started to drive and told her daughter that they needed to go to the local coffee shop to buy a hot coffee and food for this man. It was the least they could do to try and help, even if just in a small way.

The man was still lying there, not having moved since they left. The daughter, showing concern for him, but apprehension as her mother got closer. She spoke softly as she approached him.

She told him she was going to put down a coffee and food on the floor near him. She didn't want to startle him by not annoucning she was near. He didn't move or make a sound.

They left quietly, knowing this small gesture couldn't fix everything, but hoping it let him know he matters.
