PAPER

I was but a sapling, but I grew up big and strong

I was but a sapling, but I grew up big and strong because I had an important job to do,

I was but a sapling, but I grew up big and strong because I had an important job to do, as I've known all along.

I used to wear brown,

I used to wear brown, and I used to wear green

I used to wear brown, and I used to wear green all up and down,

my one hundred arms!

Each leaf more lovely than a queen.

But then you found me,

But then you found me, and I had something you wanted.

But then you found me, and I had something you wanted. You stripped me of my colors,

But then you found me, and I had something you wanted. You stripped me of my colors, and I was changed-- disenchanted.

I became small,

I became small, and I became thin.

I became small, and I became thin. You stained me with ink, with music for your violin.

You say it's art,

You say it's art, and sound for the world to hear.

But was I not art, too?

You took all I held dear.

Now that I've been used,

Now that I've been used, and yellowed, and worn,

Now that I've been used, and yellowed, and worn, you have decided me done--

I was paper. And I've been torn.
