How selfish it was

For me to fall in love with the sea Knowing that every wave Only ended in a crash And nothing could ever bring it back

You have offered a golden tidbit of a poem. Like a sun-ripened cherry, it was sweet and it was tart. It had immense wisdom in a compact package of one bite. The wording was evocative. and the meter was a perfect rhythm. To me, love cannot by definition be selfish.
