A few days ago I published a free verse version of this poem but I wanted to try doing a rhyming version too I'm unsure which is better! Decide for yourself :) Here it is...
A haze of amber flecked with gold
A haze of amber flecked with gold Rome's nightly spell takes its hold
A haze of amber flecked with gold Rome's nightly spell takes its hold citrine light gleams from our hair
A haze of amber flecked with gold Rome's nightly spell takes its hold citrine light gleams from our hair and footsteps float as if on air
The ancient mischief of ancient lanes
The ancient mischief of ancient lanes dilates our eyes, infects our brains
The ancient mischief of ancient lanes dilates our eyes, infects our brains the domes and columns coalesce
The ancient mischief of ancient lanes dilates our eyes, infects our brains the domes and columns coalesce to wink us, nudge us, urge us, 'yes'
With impish looks, our hands entwine
With impish looks, our hands entwine our faces flushed with golden wine
With impish looks, our hands entwine our faces flushed with golden wine coy laughter rolls in rustic streets
With impish looks, our hands entwine our faces flushed with golden wine coy laughter rolls in rustic streets till in our sight, the river greets
Upon the bridge, the Tiber calls
Upon the bridge, the Tiber calls our glances dip and silence falls
Upon the bridge, the Tiber calls our glances dip and silence falls with glimmered quill, the waters write
Upon the bridge, the Tiber calls our glances dip and silence falls with glimmered quill, the waters write "The time is now to seize the night"
I squeeze her hand, she bites her lip
I squeeze her hand, she bites her lip up to the ledge, I quickly skip
I squeeze her hand, she bites her lip up to the ledge, I quickly skip she joins me swiftly, turning pink
I squeeze her hand, she bites her lip up to the ledge, I quickly skip she joins me swiftly, turning pink with gazes locked, we breathe in sync
With softest hands, I brush her face
With softest hands, I brush her face and in a move that flows with grace
With softest hands, I brush her face and in a move that flows with grace our parted lips meet to compress
With softest hands, I brush her face and in a move that flows with grace our parted lips meet to compress and soon enough our tongues caress
The city grins with hushed applause
The city grins with hushed applause and through our veins its passion roars
The city grins with hushed applause and through our veins its passion roars three thousand years of joys refresh
The city grins with hushed applause and through our veins its passion roars three thousand years of joys refresh to burn again within our flesh
