A trashy poem I made for my boyfriend.

LOWLIVES

YOU AND I

WE'RE BOTH LOWLIVES

SMOKING CIGARETTES DURING THE COLD WITCHING HOURS OF DECEMBER

EATING FROZEN HAMBURGERS AND FRIES YOU BOUGHT FROM THE TOWN CENTER

YOUR CALLOUSED YET GENTLE FINGERS LACING WITH MINE

YOUR ROUGH YET WARM LIPS TASTE LIKE SWEET CHERRY WINE

I GAZED AT THE DARK SKY LITTERED WITH SHINING STARS ABOVE

BUT YOU WERE GLANCING AT ME, YOUR EYES SO FULL OF LOVE

I WAS SO HYPNOTIZED I THOUGHT I MIGHT FALL FROM THE ROCKY CLIFFS INTO THE ROARING SEA

THAT WAS A SPECIAL POWER ONLY YOU HAD OVER ME

WE TALKED SOFTLY FOR A SHORT WHILE

ABOUT THE DANGERS OF SMOKING AND HOW MUCH HOMEWORK WE HAD IN A PILE

ABOUT ANGER, LONELINESS, AND ALL THE PAST LOVES WE HAD

ALL THOSE CONVERSATIONS WERE ALWAYS SERENE AND ROMANTIC, YET UTTERLY SAD

AS THE GOLDEN SUN RISES FROM ITS SLUMBER,

YOU HASTILY SPRAY LILAC PERFUME ALL OVER OUR OVERSIZED SWEATERS

THEN WE WALK HOME IN A COMFORTABLE SILENCE

UNBOTHERED BY THE RINGING OF CHURCH BELLS AND AMBULANCE SIRENS

WE PART WAYS BY THE FORK ON THE STREET

AND SAY OUR FAREWELLS UNDER THE EARLY MORNING HEAT

IT'S MOMENTS LIKE THESE THAT MAKE ME WONDER

THAT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, WE COMPLETE EACH OTHER

BY BEING WORTHLESS HUMAN BEINGS TOGETHER

Stories We Think You'll Love 💕
