The Nameless Girl

For @enchantedink’s prompt 5: “At night, here in the library, the ghosts have voices.”

It was supposed to be a normal day.

Students sit in the lunchroom, chittering away,

Students sit in the lunchroom, chittering away, The sun bright,

Students sit in the lunchroom, chittering away, The sun bright, And the sky free of clouds,

Students sit in the lunchroom, chittering away, The sun bright, And the sky free of clouds, White tiles reflecting sunlight.

Things started well. The librarian welcomed her, And she sat down. The book was heavy and exhausting to read, And not meaning to, the girl fell asleep.

She woke with a start.

Silently chastising herself, she began to pack her bags.

But then she realized the doors of the library were locked-

But then she realized the doors of the library were locked- From the outside.

She looked around, but the librarian was gone.

She looked around, but the librarian was gone. Great, now I must spend the night here, she thought.

That was when the voices started.

The books began to whisper-

The books began to whisper- And the one she was reading began to flip its pages

The books began to whisper- And the one she was reading began to flip its pages On its own.

The voices quickly became cries

The voices quickly became cries Shrieks.

The voices quickly became cries Shrieks. The voices of the dead.

The voices quickly became cries Shrieks. The voices of the dead. The sounds of the souls of ancient writers

The voices quickly became cries Shrieks. The voices of the dead. The sounds of the souls of ancient writers Trapped between dusty spines.

They called to the girl, the living,

They called to the girl, the living, Pulling at her.

They called to the girl, the living, Pulling at her. The girl couldn't run.

They called to the girl, the living, Pulling at her. The girl couldn't run. The girl with no name.

The next day the students came into school,

And realized she was gone.

The entire village searched, but she'd disappeared.

Then a friend of hers said that she went to the library after school.

Then a friend of hers said that she went to the library after school. They searched the library,

But all they found was a book,

But all they found was a book, With half of it's pages blank,

But all they found was a book, With half of it's pages blank, The cover with no title,

And no author.
