Unhugged, hugs become suicide vests for lovers.

House Fire

I can't tell if it's my insides filling with smoke

Or the want for your hands around my ribs

The clench below my sternum

As my breath leaves me

Tight

Is the place we have held on to this

Quiet

It only passes in glances

At gas stations

Parking lots, and head nods

The acknowledgment of an unacknowledged crush

No one knows that unhugged hugs become a suicide vest for wannabe lovers

The incompatible

The love in teenage hallways

Your hands on my best friends chest

Actions

But you treated me different

Not like skin and hair

Purfume bathed backpacks in high school corridors

The grab of the hand as we passed

Fingerprints are the closest to kissed lips

The posterboard in class

You asking

"Is that your house on fire or someone else's, because I couldn't sleep without being sure?"
