A week had pass since the party down at the slave quarters occurred. Irene had since grown accustomed to the grounds of the plantation and seemed to work non-stop.
However, despite feeling overwhelmed from the work and homesick, another feeling sprouted within her: Love.
Irene often wondered about John since the party, but she hadn't had time to return to the quarters being that the Greenes kept her busy.
The only day she had "free" was Sunday, however it just seemed to be that their schedules were always bypassing each other.
Dinner had just finished as the Greenes went into their own wings of the house. Irene and Ida cleaned the table and there wasn't much else to do.
Irene really hadn't had time to venture further into the Greene's house for she was confined to just the attic and the dining room.
She took this as her chance saying to Ida, " I'se be right behind you". Ida responded saying " You best not get caught. Massa dont like idle slaves wondering".
Ida left out the back door, while Irene ventured out of the dining room into the hallway between the living room and dining room.
Stairs laid directly to the left of the hallway, which led to the second floor and the front door was in front of the stairs.
Near the end of the hallway a door led to the back porch, however she didn't know what the others doors were for. She was walking down the hallway when she spotted a door behind the stairs.
She pressed her face to the door for she was hesitant to open it. She could hear muffled mumbling, but when she was about to open it, Mr. Greene slammed the door back shut.
With a red face and steaming breath, he said " Slaves aren't to be wondering where they shouldn't, get to your place before I take a whipping to you!". Irene quickly jumped and just about ran.
She didn't stop until she reached the kitchen. She crashed in the kitchen looking wild as ever and with a stutter she said " Ma- Massa al- most ca- me".
"Gal iffin you dont slow down you gon drown in yo own words", Mama Ju said. " I'se was looking through the house and Mr. Greene caught me. I'se scared to go back.", Irene said.
" You might as well stay yo self here then fo t'night.", Mama Ju remarked. Irene made herself a pad near the fireplace as Mama Ju snored loudly on her cot.
Just as she was about to doze off, a tap sounded at the window. Irene didn't move and she heard it again. She cracked the door and to her surprise it was the one and only, John.
"What you here this time....", before she would finish John put his finger to her lips and ushered her outside. " Come wit me, I'se got someting to show you", John whispered.
Feeling excited and curious, she followed him through the night. John took her through the fields of cotton, until they reached a patch of field. " We can talk louda now.
We's not near much people " , John said. " Why are we out here", Irene still whispered. " Lay down and I'll show you", John chuckled.
Hesitant, Irene laid down beside John and before she could ask anything else, he started pointing out the constellations.
" This here is um the Orion an the next one over dere is the big dippa", John called out. Irene was overwhelmed by the pretty twinkling lights in the sky and chuckled as this.
" John this here is beautiful, how you know all this here names", Irene remarked. " Fore my papa was sold off, every night he a take me out and show me these here", John replied.
They sat there for sometime until Irene remarked, " John dont you think it time to be heading back?". " I think you right about that", he responded.
He led her through the same fields and returned her to the door of the kitchen. Before he left he quickly kissed her cheek, slipping into the night.
Irene's heart beat quickly, but before she could call out he was already gone. Her heart swole with happiness and she thought " I'se got me a beau now".
She chuckled when she thought this and slipped back into the kitchen. She laid back on her cot and peacefully went to sleep.
