A poem on mental illness; dealing with severe social anxiety.

Into Oblivion

Upon a crowded room, you gaze;

Suddenly frozen, petrified.

A thousand tiny insects, ripple underneath, rising from your toes, all the way up;

You want to jump out of your skin.

A million disembodied voices;

Gruff and deep, shrill and piercing, near and distant,

They clamor between your ears, your head pounding.

Feeling faint, lucid white light distends from the edges of your vision, slowly closing in.

Heart pulsating, breath hastening;

Down, down, down, you plummet into oblivion.

Cold, hard floor below you, your eyes flutter open, arms guide you up.

All of this before the first step in; and as you proceed, the panic arises again.
