She would always get help from her mother, father and people who were close to her.
Her mother, Jessica, was a hard working woman who would always make sure Naima was happy, safe and was in good hands. She wanted the best for her child. She wanted her to know that she will always be by her side no matter what.
One morning, she decided to go to Los Angeles with Naima. She packed her things and left. She wanted to go to Los Angeles because she wanted Naima to see her dad so that she will be happy to see him.
After a long flight, she took a cab and went to Jacob's house. When she got there, she felt a bit nervous because it has been a while since they have seen each other but she put a smile on her face and knocked on the door.
When she knocked on the door, Jacob opened the door. When he opened it, he said, Hi Jessica, How are you? It's been a while since we've spoken but when he looked at Naima he was shocked. He said why did you bring her here and I said because your daughter wanted to see you. He replied, I don't want to see her. I don't care about her. I would never love her.
My heart was filled with rage. I couldn't believe that came out of his mouth. I slapped him across his face and gave him a piece of my mind and left. After I left his house, I cried. It was like I was being stabbed in the back.
My heart was broken into pieces like I was thrown underneath a bus. I never thought that he would say those words about her. He just didn't care about her.
The next day, I went back home. I told my mother everything that happened. She said that he doesn't know how great you are raising Naima and that I am a strong and independent woman and that I will find someone who will love me and my baby.
A few years past and Naima was turning 10. We had a party for her with all of her friends and family members. She was so happy and was having so much fun. During the party, Naima told me that she was so grateful to have me and thanked me for everything and gave me a kiss.
My heart was filled with joy and tears when my babygirl said that to me. I will always give her the best and only the best.
One night, My friend invited me to dinner and I said yes. I took a taxi and went to the restaurant. When I got there, he was outside waiting for me. I came out of the taxi and we both went inside. We both had an amazing night together.
We talked, laughed and just had fun. Later that night, he took me home and said maybe sometime we could hang out and I said yes. We started going out more often and talked. It was like I was in love again.
Naima came to me and asked me, Mommy, why isn't daddy in my life and why hasn't he called me. I said that your father is a nice person but he just doesn't know how to be a father. He missed out on a lot of things when you were younger.
You know why, because you are so special. He doesn't even know how fun and amazing and loving you are. Just remember one thing, I will always love you. She replied, I love you mommy and I always will.
Jessica finally introduced Derick to her family. They were happy and we all talked. Derick loved my family, he especially loved my daughter. He would always talk with her and give jokes. A few days later, Derick introduced us to his family. We all talked and everything.
Months past, Derick proposed to Jessica. We all had an engagement party for them. They were so grateful for the party and we all had fun. I saw my mother smiled for the first time in a very long time. She was so happy and I was just so grateful she found someone who loved her and me. Sooner or later they got married.
When they got married, Derick made me his daughter and I was just so thankful. We had fun together, we talked and just laughed. Once in a very long time, I was happy, loved and had an awesome and supportive stepdad by my side no matter what.
Having a stepdad is a lot of fun because without one I wouldn't be happy and my mother would be sad but since he came into our life. Our life has changed tremendously. So be grateful for everything. Thank you for reading my story. By: Logan-Rae Williams Jamaican author June 18,2020
