I was a child when I left So much a child, I did

I was a child when I left

So much of a child, I did

What I didn't know, I left

And you know what they say,

Children are so quick to adapt, aren't they?

What else is there to do?

I was a child when I left

I walked onto new roads

Changed into more Clothes

Heard other birds' songs

Ate unfamiliar foods

I was going places

Becoming more like them

Less like me

A lot like no one at all

Empty shell of a soul in transit

I was a child when I left

I looked ahead

Because behind was lost

I had done that too

So I could move forward

I was a child when I left

and children don't know about grieving, do they?

So I didn't

I kept moving

In all directions

Meeting more faces

Reading more stories

Greeting and Leaving

A hundred times more

As if by instinct,

- or is it second nature?

All the time, I paced myself

So not to fall over

Or lose my breath completely,

I nearly did

And fell, too many times

I heard a voice, I looked around

Hazy after a long-haul flight

Wrinkled by years of not sleeping in my bed

The little girl went again:

Have we arrived yet?

I dropped my luggage

I was a child when I left

It took me thirty years to arrive
