My eyes glaze over the mahogany brown doors as my hand wraps itself around the golden doorknob. My heart is like a train pounding down the tracks.
My legs are shaking so much I think they are going to cave in beneath me. A light drizzle of sweat arises from my forehead and in my palms. I begin to question myself.
"What if it's a lie? What if behind these doors are my worst fears?"
I shake my head in an attempt to clear it. It's now or never. I twist the door knob slowly a ray of light shines through the gap.
A sudden rush of ardreline rushes through my veins as i swing the door open before I have a second to second think it. I'm in awe.
A mixture of wonderful coloured foliage and leaves wrap above me making an arch way. Flowers are perfectly bloomed.
A noise catches my ear, birds chirping I change my glance to see two red robins chirping about. I take a big inhale of the fresh air. And that's when I notice the figure. Back against me.
It sits on a dark, worn wooden bench. Light brown hair, shaggy woollen jumper. A stranger, but there is no fear that hides inside me.
Instead I'm drawn to him from a feeling down deep in the darkest pit in my stomach. I walk around the bench and take my first look at his face. He looks up at me and gives me a wide grin.
"Hi grandad" I whisper.
The redness on his nose is almost like a constant blushing effect and his light brown hair is missing from the crown of his head but it's made it for with his overgrown eyebrows.
His eyes welcome me. He reaches out his hand. I take it and somehow it fits perfectly inside of his. I sit down beside him.
A thousand things I've always wanted to say and now I can't think of one. I look up, his eyes meet mine.
"I know" he says in his rusky yet gentle voice.
I had forgotten what it was like.
"But .." i croak as my eyes flood with tears.
"Babygirl I know"
He pulls my head onto his shoulder and wraps his arm around me. I don't know how much I longed for this. This moment right here.
He takes my face into his hand
" I am so proud of the person you've become".
I rest my head on his palm trying to gather myself.
"You are everything i hoped for and more"
An eruption comes from behind my eyes I don't think I've never needed anything more than that. I shake my head
"Please, never let me go "
He draws me closer to himself again I smell his cologne and cigarettes as my face gets tickled by his old woollen jumper. I have never been more content than this.
