Every time I get bad anxiety I completely lose my appetite. Just the smell or thought of food makes me feel sick. During these periods, I can't eat or sleep. The thought of food starts to make me feel sick to the stomach, and I actually have to tell myself that it's okay, and I don't have to eat anything until I'm ready.
A truly stressful anxiety filled $h!tstorm? I won't eat for days. It's hard to even think about food.
Whenever this happens to me, I buy packs of Ensure shakes (or any kind of nutrition shake) and packs of Gatorade. This allows me to get some calories and electrolytes in bland/easy to swallow down forms.
I'm slightly underweight as is, so when I have no appetite because of anxiety, I get even more anxious about not eating, which in turn makes me even less hungry. It's a vicious cycle. During exams I'm having periods that I eat a banana a day and drink a glass of water because I'm so anxious!
I recommend apples, clif bars/other granola/energy bars, OJ, soup/plain broth, and gatorade for keeping calories somewhat close to daily recommended intake, so you don't exacerbate your anxiety by starving yourself.
My way of overcoming it (after trying to address what's getting to me) is to definitely supplement whatever meals you might be skipping with a nice soup.
Bowl, cup or whatever getting any form of nutrients into you is important for a speedy recovery. Try including a slice of bread with it just so you get something thicker into yourself. Try drinking/eating it while watching episodes of a nice show in order to distract yourself from whatever issues you might be overthinking.
Hopefully, the nice warm soup compound with the thoughts of whatever show you've been watching might help you drift off to sleep.
