The Storms Rolled In By: Mike Mezz
Great grandad loaded up the wagon for a quest Then fearlessly headed out West Taking his family and everything they own They rode out facing the great unknown
Dozens of acres with grant money to invest Figuring this was all for the best They staked out their claim and settled in They planted the seeds and the wait began
Then the rain poured down A precious gift from the heavens above The storms rolled in It could rain everyday but it's never enough
The days passed by and many years gone Generations kept plowing this land Many children were born and moved on Those that stayed put the seeds back in
Some years we have plenty and some not so much Many farmers can't afford seeds to plant To plow these fields one has to be tough We fight the weather, the banks and now we're fighting for our land.....
Then the rain poured down A precious gift from the angels above The storms rolled in They can you wash you away but it's never enough
Great granddaddy died in the house he built Over a hundred years before I was born I swear he was standing beside me this morning When the Sheriff showed up at my door
Isaid, "Don't you come down here with this foreclosure notice in hand" "You can take everything else but you're not taking this land"
Then the rain poured down A precious gift from heaven above The rain crashed down It stormed like hell but it wasn't enough
And the storms rolled in......
In the U.S. ,farm bankruptcies were up 12 percent in the Midwest from July of 2018 to June of 2019; they’re up 50 percent in the Northwest. Tens of thousands have simply stopped farming, knowing that reorganization through bankruptcy won’t save them.
The nation lost more than 100,000 farms between 2011 and 2018; 12,000 of those between 2017 and 2018 alone. Suicides in farm communities are happening with alarming frequency as farmers are losing their farms in near record levels. Most of these small family farms have been in their family for many generations.
"The Storms Rolled In" is dedicated to all the farmers around the world who sacrifice so much so we can put food on our tables. Thank you! Visit your local farmer's market and support your local family farms.
