Nobody lives here but me and......

The Last Man

The Last Man By: Mike Mezz (A Narrative Poem)

My name is Jimmy Weekley For all my seventy years I've never done things meekly

All my neighbors are gone I live out Pigeon Roost Hollow And I'm here still living on

Sometimes I think I'd like to see Paris But my eyes don't work so good anymore There's something here I adore

It keeps me on this mountain That's always been outside my door My wife Cindy and I didn't need much more

My name is Jimmy Weekley I'm the last man on the mountain Nobody lives here but me And the Arch Coal Company

For 48 years we sat on the porch There was work in the mines And some good and bad times

We always stood hand in hand Then came the Arch Coal Company And they bought up all the land

They blew the top off Mount Blair Dust came in thick from the North And they finally forced us indoors

They tried hard to make us leave But I ain't going nowhere They're nothing but a bunch of thieves

My name is Jimmy Weekley I'm the last man on the mountain Nobody lives here but me And the Arch Coal Company

Like they did everyone else They offered us a lot money Thousands of dollars to sell

They even tried to intimidate us with fear But there's no way to put a price On all the footprints we left here

But now my wife Cindy is gone It's lonely without my best friend I'm not scared and I'm staying on

It sure makes my heart hurt When I think they'll try to blow Pigeon Roost Hollow from the Earth

The only thing left standing here Between the company and Blair Mountain Is my elderly old self and my will

So as long as I'm breathing Arch Coal can just go to Hell Because I will never be leaving

My name is Jimmy Weekley I'm the last man on the mountain Nobody lives here but me And the Arch Coal Company

As long as I'm living I'll never sell I'm Jimmy Weekley and you can tell Arch Coal to go straight to Hell

James "Jimmy" Weekley was 74 when he died August. 22, 2014 in Blair, West Virginia. He would never see the day when his persistence finally paid off. When Blair Mountain was listed on The Register of Historic Places on June 29, 2018 and protected forever from coal mining.

You can rest in peace now, Jimmy. Pigeon Roost Hollow and Blair Mountain will never be touched by coal mining. Copyright © 2021 Mike Mezz (All rights reserved)
