From The. Ashes (A Narrative Poem) By: Mike Mezz
It was a rainy and foggy night As our team left North Carolina Another loss under the lights They headed back to West Virginia
It was the first time they took a plane They stood there tired and drained They boarded the flight in the rain A Southern Airways chartered jet
A two or three hour long flight Still reeling from the loss mentally Marshall University flew into the night November fourteenth, nineteen seventy
All of Huntington listened to the game The news came in about a plane crash A jet had hit the mountainside in the rain People at Tri-State Airport saw a flash
Confusion and speculation followed Was it our MU Football team? Our hearts and souls just hollowed This had to be a really bad dream
The news came in late Saturday evening It was our MU football teams plane People went to the airport searching Our entire football team had been slain
The whole city wept
All seventy-five passengers perished This can't be true, how could it be? It was like they all just vanished Girlfriends of dead players screamed
Hearses passed each other on the street Funerals held for weeks and every day Huntington was still in utter disbelief No more football on Saturday's to play
MU decided never to play football again No coaches or players were left But minds were changed the work began They had to start over from scratch
This Marshall team was brand new Mostly all freshman on the roster The NCAA had to change the rules It took decades for Marshall to prosper
The Herd lost more games than anyone All through the1970's Marshall's first winning season was 1984 Fans openly wept in Johnson City
From the Ashes we rose like a Phoenix A transformation that took years It's still the worst sports disaster in American history The Herd has a twelveth man at the wheel
