Almanzo found his footing on the boards of the roof he stood on. He scanned his surroundings carefully, keeping a watch out for his opponent.
An arrow whizzed past his head and stuck into the cracks of the chimney behind him. He threw a fireball in the direction the arrow came from.
A yell as his opponent jumped out of the way, then Almanzo knew he was safe. His flame-like eyes flickered in the evening light. “You alright, Charlie?”
“You almost fried me, Al!” Shouted a shorter, blond man with dark brown eyes. He stalked towards Almanzo with his bow and arrows in hand.
Two fireballs formed in Almanzo’s hands as Charlie got closer. “Drop them, or else.” He ordered, trying not to smile. He dropped his weapons, tossing the bow in Almanzo’s direction.
“Better. Now admit defeat.”
“That’s right, admit it. Fire beats unmeltable arrows any day. Say it, Charlie.”
“Fine.” Charlie growled. “You win again.”
Almanzo smiled. “That’s what I like to hear!” Charlie grinned as he walked over to him. They shook hands, then picked up their mess on the roofs.
It was raining all night, and when Almanzo woke up again for the third time that night, he saw the figures of men in black cloaks.
He formed a steady flame in the palm of his hand, then walked out of his makeshift house.
His black hair was messy, and damp with sweat and early morning dew that got in through his hut. He saw ten figures surrounding him, all within range of blasting.
His eyes glowed in the dark like little flames, and his hands held two fireballs, ready to be thrown at any sign of attack.
“Who are you, and what do you want?” He shouted into the night. The figures stayed still while he spoke. “Who are you?” He asked a little louder.
The figures behind him crept forward to grab him. Almanzo spun around on his heel and blasted the three that came at him. Seven were left in front of him.
The figures didn’t talk, just slowly moved forward. Four disappeared from his view, then grabbed his arms.
The tallest came closer. “Don’t struggle, we are stronger than you and we know exactly what you will do next.” His voice seemed to come from everywhere.
“We are taking you to a safer place, a young man as yourself with this immense power should be taught properly.
” Another cloaked figure came up to Almanzo, then knocked him out with the hilt of a dagger.
