A Machine's Mind

A Machine's Mind: Part 1 (a 40 followers special series! 🎉)

"Machine? Dad, what machine?" I stammered, following him into the chamber.

"You'll understand in time," He answered. "For now, work."

"On what?!" I looked around. Nothing useful in the slightest could be seen anywhere.

I suppose I should explain how I got here?

Here. I'll tell you.

It was a normal August day with my family. My dad left for work and my mom went upstairs to look some stuff up.

Me and my sister were expected to do something productive with our time. I groaned.

"Hey, wanna get out of here?" My sister, Missy, asked.

"Missy, I don't know-"

"C'mon, what's going outside going to hurt?"

So I followed her outside. We hopped on our bikes.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Anywhere," She answered with a grin.

I shrugged and took off, her following closely behind. I started down a third downhill.

"Car," I called behind me. I smiled into the wind.

Once I got to flat ground, I looked behind me.

"S-sis?" I quickly pedaled back up the hill. My hands covered my mouth in a swift motion.

I leaned over. She was bleeding in the middle of the street. I tossed her bike aside, put her behind me, and went home as quickly as possible.

Panting hard, I went inside. I tried to look for my mom.

She was upstairs as usual. She immediately brought sis to the hospital.

She didn't make it.

Years later, my dad quit his job for science. He started researching, spending all day down in his lab.

Slowly, my parents drifted apart. My mother called it "wasting money." I called it "cool."

Either way, my family started to fall apart. I barely went outside. I couldn't help it.

We barely got on after that. But my dad, every night, he would tell me stories.

Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm twelve and too old for bedtime stories. But they're cool. Different.

I'd always like to believe my favorite was about him.

But that's a story for next time.

And it may just answer the question: What is my Dad looking for?

EDIT:

(so, if you're wondering where the car that hit Missy went, it ran away after hitting her). (it was scared of getting caught, and since he had to bike back up he didn't see the car drive past). (the concept is basically that she got run over). (she probably didn't hear him).

if you have any questions, I'm free to answer them!
