Misunderstanding

by MaddieCakes

It was almost 5 o'clock in the afternoon on a Tuesday.

*Sam's a half-hour late home from work. What the hell's going on?*

Her phone buzzed in her hand.

**BREAKING NEWS**

4:46 PM – MAJOR ACCIDENT ON I-80W

SEMI ROLLED ONTO CAR

She swiped it open and was brought to a news article. Her heartbeat was wild and her eyes struggled to focus through her tears, she only caught a few phrases.

“... green 2009 Mustang... semi transporting gasoline...”

“... roaring blaze...”

“... no survivors...”

“... bodies unidentifiable at this time...”

“... license plate number confirms vehicle belonged to 28-year-old Samuel Patterson...”

It was 5:00 pm. Mary took Sam's straight razor and glided it at an angle across her inner thigh.

She knew she only had a minute or less before she'd black out, maybe a few minutes before she'd bleed out completely.

She looked at the home screen on her phone, it was one of their engagement photos. Her favorite. They laid on their backs on the hood of his bright green Mustang, pointing out clouds. She smiled.

Her eyelids felt so heavy.

Her phone buzzed in her hand.

*Sorry, stuck on the interstate, really nasty accident up ahead. Phone was dead, or I'd have let you know sooner. Had to use my buddy's car charger, he's giving me a ride home.*

Her phone buzzed on the bathroom floor.

*I let my boss borrow my car. His wife went into labor at about 4:30. Couldn't exactly ride his bike 40 miles to the hospital, y'know. Be home soon. Love you, so very much!*
