May 2018 Prompt: I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain this to you
May 2018 Word: Ghastly
The Fault, Dear Brutus
Juliet was in love with an opossum.
"NO!" Her parents said. "He is simply ghastly."
But Juliet was in love. She had met him at a summer camp dance and that was that. She knew he was the ONE.
Her friend Polly, flabbergasted, asked, "Why him? His tail doesn't even have hair!"
"You know I have issues with hair, Polly", Juliet answered. "And then men in our species are SO hairy."
"But why Him!" Polly wailed.
"I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain this to you, Polly", Juliet said, frantically rushing around. "I am going to meet him tonight and we are getting married."
Polly gasped. "But your parents! Your families have been at war for ages! And you are so young!"
"Polly", Juliet's voice was curt, "He is my true love. If you continue in this line of discussion, I will throw your prickly self out the window."
Juliet looked at her masked eyes in the mirror one last time, kissed Polly goodbye and climbed down the tree.
Romeo was running late. He had intended to scatter roses all around the base of the tree.
But his parents stayed up late for the first time in their lives and he couldn't sneak out until they had went to bed.
He couldn't believe Juliet had agreed to marry him. He couldn't believe he had been brave enough to sneak out tonight, to go against his parents. But that's what Juliet did for him.
She made him brave.
She was so beautiful. Her black mask gleamed and her ringed tail was soft as a baby duck. And she was going to be his.
Romeo started across the road, wrapped up in thoughts of his lovely Juliet. Almost there, almost there!
Whoosh! Bright lights and a loud sound roared past Romeo. "No, no!" Romeo panicked. He could feel his nervous system trying to shut down. "Fight it! For Juliet!" But he couldn't.
He stumbled and fell, his last conscious thought of his beloved.
When Juliet came to the road and saw Romeo's limp form, she screeched. "No!" She ran to him, trying to pick him up in her arms, trying to perform CPR.
"Come back, my love!" But there was no response. In a state of utter panic, Juliet started pacing in circles. "This cant be real! It must be a dream! I can't live without my Romeo.
I must go to him!" She started back toward Romeo's prone body.
Splat! There was impact. Then nothing.
Hours later, Romeo awoke with a start. He was late! Juliet would think he had chickened out! He scrabbled to his feet and then, at the sight before him, sank back down.
His poor Juliet lay before him, paws stretched, forever trying to reach him.
Romeo took her into his arms, kissed her forehead and with tears streaming down his cheeks, walked into the light.
