Sometimes I imagine my art as a baby with different co-parents. One of my favorites is H. R Giger.

Ode to Mr. Giger

I'm a master poet, you know.

I'm a celebrity author who was knighted by the queen

I'm a celebrity author who was knighted by the queen twice.

But that does not seem to faze our little baby.

Here I am, tucked away in the corner

Here I am, tucked away in the corner of her other father's art studio

cramped passive aggressive

cramped passive aggressive drawing a fish flopping

cramped passive aggressive drawing a fish flopping and gasping for water

cramped passive aggressive drawing a fish flopping and gasping for water with borrowed children's crayons

watching him work with an airbrush expertly

taming horror on a canvas the size of a house

which fits in this tiny room better than

I do.

Pride beams when the child of mine

Pride beams when the child of mine drags in roadkill asking for approval which is freely given

apprenticing nightmares that any other

apprenticing nightmares that any other person in their right mind

would find abhorrent.

I maintain that he has no more value

I maintain that he has no more value than me

or so I say scribbling

or so I say scribbling confidence away more and more in this lonely corner

seated out of my element.

"Well airbrush makes no clear verse"

I say smearing stale wax into trash paper

tempted to win some unwinnable contest

with my insulted pen

eagerly waiting like a B-52 bomber

eagerly waiting like a B-52 bomber for an ignored declaration of war.

His back is turned

His back is turned humming with her in his lap

teaching her shading and how to incorporate

pillars of vertebrae with living metal

breathing and beaming horrors

and neither are impressed with my honors.

There he is focused entirely on the next generation

There he is focused entirely on the next generation of demented artists both excited

for trains engineered from our daughter's repurposed roadkill.

Thanks for reading!
