A conversation between lovers; two ships in the night

Back and Forth

"Are you afraid I'll leave you?

"Not afraid, but certain."

"Why so sure?"

"I cannot even fathom forever, much less hold it in my arms."

"I can't promise you forever..."

"I wasn't asking."

"But, will a lifetime do?"

"That depends..."

"On?"

"Is it mine or yours?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are your promising to stand by my side until life empties from this thing I call self, or, binding my hand to yours for as long as your mortal coil demands something to hold onto?"

"I don't understand the question..."

"Then why did you ask it?"
