A reflection on mothers and their sleeping newborns.

Basking

by kristasiemion

Little cherub wings spread upon the vacant floor, their pastel purls rising in even crests around the gently swaddled form.

Every breath rustles newly fleshed feathers, their delicate patchwork flared beneath small, outstretched arms, ready to touch the sky;

Eager to see the moon burst into scattered dreams, sprinkling the heavens with prismacolor stardust, as though laughter splashed across the Milky Way.

The sleeping cherub smiles, her apple-rounded cheeks betraying secret delight as her mother coos nearby - patient yet watchful, basking in first flight.
