she lived in the dining room
because they only used it on holidays.

living space

she lived in the dining room

because they only used it on holidays.

notebooks, knickknacks

CDs stacked on end tables,

clustered around lamps, vases, she napped

beneath walnut dining table;

at the owner's insistence

sometimes she scooped up her mess -

that's what they called it -

donated her dreams

and each time,

a little part of her vanished

only to be rebuilt

with crayon-colored memories

new books and felt-tip pens,

scrunchies, jackets, midnight wishes.

they never understood

why she couldn't confine her life

to scribbles and a pillow.
