Runaway Rain

"How long are you going to keep this up?"

She pauses in her laughter, eyes narrowing quizzically as they lean back.

She pauses in her laughter, eyes narrowing quizzically as they lean back. They spare her a glance, taking a drag from the barely burning cigarette.

"This? I-I'm not sure what you mean."

"This? I-I'm not sure what you mean." She deflects, crossing her arms as the rain steadily drums against the canopy covering.

"Give it up, Kat."

"Give it up, Kat." They drone, flicking their cigarette out into the rain, the stream of water flushing it into the storm drain.

The change is almost instantaneous.

"Why don't you go criticize someone else, Aug."

"Why don't you go criticize someone else, Aug." Kat snaps, nostrils flaring at their nonchalant shrug and head tilt.

"It's raining."

"So? Get lost."

Aug glances at their best friend, watching her break so silently and calmly.

Aug glances at their best friend, watching her break so silently and calmly. The ruined make up streaks across her face, staining the white lace veil.

Aug glances at their best friend, watching her break so silently and calmly. The ruined make-up streaks across her face, staining the white lace veil. Their hand reaches out, heavily patting her artfully pinned hair.

"I can't leave when I've just been found."

They reply, mouth tightening at the honesty ringing through.

"Shut up, you fugly bastard."

"Shut up, you fugly bastard." She weakly laughs, holding their hand to her head as she continues to cry.

"No, you left that specimen at the altar, remember?"

"No, you left that specimen at the altar, remember?" They say, earning a stronger laugh.

The heavy rain continues,

The heavy rain continues, her cries and their feelings lost within it.
