Clumsy Love

He approaches the table and swallows his fear,

He approaches the table and swallows his fear, knowing that she voluntarily sat here.

He approaches the table and swallows his fear, knowing that she voluntarily sat here. She stands for a hug

He approaches the table and swallows his fear, knowing that she voluntarily sat here. She stands for a hug and he goes for a handshake.

A handshake hug ensues, as if she's one of the dudes which couldn't be further from the truth.

He sits, subtly flexing, trying to impress her.

He sits, subtly flexing, trying to impress her. She sits, obnoxiously blushing, trying to recede.

He tries to ask a question, a conversation starter,

He tries to ask a question, a conversation starter, But his tongue is tied and his mind is racing; frantic.

She answers silent questions, her conversation armor,

She answers silent questions, her conversation armor, But her nervous chattering is not a charmer; must be her karma.

A wave of words crashes into his ears, deafening, he did not hear a single statement.

She pauses her incoherent ranting, knowing this date is coming in for a crash-landing from her blatantly, boring rambling.

He is devastated to realize he is slouching, He sits up quickly and steps on her foot.

He is devastated to realize he is slouching, He sits up quickly and steps on her foot. Noticing now their hearts aren't wanting, But blatantly avoiding unavoidable truth.

She is beautiful and he is handsome, But if anything, this date, he should have canceled.

She startles at his sudden touch, wacking her ankle against the metal table leg

She startles at his sudden touch, wacking her ankle against the metal table leg in an effort to get away from all he makes her feel.

The wind carries her squeal, the ugly noise beginning

The wind carries her squeal, the ugly noise beginning the unraveling of all her oddities that

The wind carries her squeal, the ugly noise beginning the unraveling of all her oddities that lead to unwanted canceling.

For him, the cry was of sheer terror, Gathering his things and apologizing with every breath.

For him, the cry was of sheer terror, Gathering his things and apologizing with every breath. He is embarrassed by the lack of conversation shared.

For him, the cry was of sheer terror, Gathering his things and apologizing with every breath. He is embarrassed by the lack of conversation shared. Fleeing away, wanting the security of his bed.

He lays there still, with his phone placed on his chest.

He lays there still, with his phone placed on his chest. Insecurities filled, nothing left to be said.

She opens her phone as she opens her door,

She opens her phone as she opens her door, Waiting for a text from him to make sure she's secure.

Both waiting,

Both waiting, hand on phone,

Both waiting, hand on phone, frantically typing an apology note.

But never hitting send,

For that would drop the need to pretend;

For that would drop the need to pretend; unable to be authentic.
