Headed south to my first duty station,
I had driven most of the day
Now it was late, & a light drizzle made it hard to see much
All I wanted? A warm motel bed in this small Kentucky town
Missing my turn, I made a U-turn..
..and just as quickly those all-too familiar red-blue lights came on in my rearview mirror.
Images of small town cops from movies filled my mind
The officer motioned for me to roll down my window.
"Did you know you made an illegal U-turn back there?"
"Sorry, I was trying to find somewhere to stay.
..Guess it was hard to see the sign."
"License and registration please."
I thought for sure I was done, as I handed my life over.
Visions of spending the night in a dank cell
..(or worse) filled my mind.
"Where you headed, son?"
"..my first duty station - Pensacola - for flight training"
He must've noticed my military ID as I handed him my driver's license.
"Well, be careful, okay? And keep it below 10 miles over..
10 miles over the speed limit - that's the limit."
It wasn't 'til years later that I experienced racism..
