Carefully, delicately, she sliced the fruit and peeled off the thick skin. Red rubies, jewels of untold sweetness, glittered mockingly back at her.
“It has come to this?”
Faint whispers, falling gently through the cavern ceiling, willing her back to the bright, sickening world up above.
The silent question in her husband’s voice drew her focus away from the whispers. Looking at him, she smiled sadly.
“I fear, my precious one, that I have lost my mind.”
The deity chuckled softly, resting his gaze on his wife’s face.
“My darling, we all have. I most of all! But we cannot let that keep us from going on.”
He took the pomegranate from her hands, placing it aside before tenderly taking her hands in his own.
“Come, my love, and we shall greet the world anew”.
