A poem about nervous habits and thoughts. Thank you for reading :) <3

young hummingbird

When time was

When time was your friendly neighbour,

When time was your friendly neighbour, you'd skip down to the shore.

When time was your friendly neighbour, you'd skip down to the shore. Watch the sun kiss the sky

When time was your friendly neighbour, you'd skip down to the shore. Watch the sun kiss the sky goodnight and the leap of the moon,

When time was your friendly neighbour, you'd skip down to the shore. Watch the sun kiss the sky goodnight and the leap of the moon, set free, spreading out

its rumpled tulle before

its rumpled tulle before engulfing you in a

its rumpled tulle before engulfing you in a powdered clasp.

Each day, you'd collect

Each day, you'd collect a handful of pebbles--

Each day, you'd collect a handful of pebbles-- no bigger than your palm

Each day, you'd collect a handful of pebbles-- no bigger than your palm and no smaller

Each day, you'd collect a handful of pebbles-- no bigger than your palm and no smaller than your worries.

Picking at the skin

Picking at the skin that hugged

Picking at the skin that hugged your fingernails,

Picking at the skin that hugged your fingernails, watching ripples

Picking at the skin that hugged your fingernails, watching ripples break the mindless

Picking at the skin that hugged your fingernails, watching ripples break the mindless silence.

As if you could unlock

As if you could unlock the key to life,

As if you could unlock the key to life, secrets of the stars

As if you could unlock the key to life, secrets of the stars in your own

As if you could unlock the key to life, secrets of the stars in your own thrumming flesh.

Only when

Only when the water'd still,

Only when the water'd still, would you hear

Only when the water'd still, would you hear the twinging purr

Only when the water'd still, would you hear the twinging purr of the hummingbird

Only when the water'd still, would you hear the twinging purr of the hummingbird in your stomach.

*afterword* When I was about 8, I had some bad habits. Whenever I'd get nervous, I'd pick the skin from around my fingertips or even chew my lip. Quite obsessively, too. It took a while to stop, but the prompt today reminded me of it. :) <3
