A poem about Ramadan preparations, (Islamic holy month), which I wrote based off of my family! XD Thank you for reading! <3

moonfeast

we knead the dough until we are knuckle-deep

we knead the dough until we are knuckle-deep and a little flour jumps the bowl,

we knead the dough until we are knuckle-deep and a little flour jumps the bowl, makes it way

to my chin.

to my chin. my mother

to my chin. my mother crimps the pastry with the speed

to my chin. my mother crimps the pastry with the speed of a hundred of these hands

stringing up lights,

stringing up lights, followed by the sun

stringing up lights, followed by the sun which bakes their skin,

stringing up lights, followed by the sun which bakes their skin, golden brown.

mangoes ripe spill over our fingers

mangoes ripe spill over our fingers and into our mouths,

mangoes ripe spill over our fingers and into our mouths, the juice

mangoes ripe spill over our fingers and into our mouths, the juice stains my brother's shirt.

he wipes his face with the crook

he wipes his face with the crook of his arm

he wipes his face with the crook of his arm and for the rest of the day,

smells sweet with the table flowers

smells sweet with the table flowers when we welcome the moon,

smells sweet with the table flowers when we welcome the moon, and the children

hose themselves down,

hose themselves down, no strangers

to the white heat of the night.

(i.n.)

ramadan mubarak! i wrote this based on my own family's tradition before the month. which means that yesterday, i spent the whole day with my mom and sister filling and making samosas, while my little brother drank a LOT of mango juice and had a water fight with my dad. XD

thank you for reading and stay home, stay safe! <3
