for those who survive

forborne

by erenah

it goes like this:

love can be corrosive can be

a force inescapable

as gravity

I grew up in a cage whose bars were made of filial piety

and it took a lifetime to realise

I wasn't the crime but its victim -

damage beyond the ambit of any conviction:

my mother has now been 3 years institutionalised - the victim of her own schizophrenic, alcoholic's mind

and I am an adult now,

finally free

learning to exercise atrophied wings -

at peace -

its own sacred liberty
