The Stop

My eyes snapped open from a dream I couldn't remember. I had fallen asleep while waiting for the bus. I looked up and down the long stretch of road, not a vehicle in sight as far as I could see. A Light breeze sent ripples through the fields on either side of the road, barely visible under the dim moonlight. I glanced down to my watch, 1:33 AM.

I let out a heavy sigh and hung my head, my eyelids felt heavy but I didn't want to let them close again. The overhead light in the covered booth of the bus stop flickered. I glanced up to look at it, but my eyes locked on to something else.

Across the street, standing just behind the edge of the tall grass, was a man. All I could see was his bald head and piercing eyes reflecting the light, watching me.

Naturally, this made me uneasy. I opened my mouth to call out to him, but from the corner of my eye I noticed headlights coming over the hill down the road. I turned to look and, sure enough, it was the bus I'd been waiting for.

I looked back toward the man and was frozen when I realized he was now in the middle of the road, marching toward me in long, determined strides. He was completely nude, smeared with dirt and Lord knows what else. The expression on his face was contorted in both anguish and hilarity.

I could read in his eyes that he wanted to do me harm, but he didn't understand why. I only stared in terror and confusion as he stopped in front of me, staring back down at me with a pained smile. He reached out and grabbed me by the face, screaming now. I screamed too.

My eyes snapped open from a dream I couldn't remember. I had fallen asleep while waiting for the bus...
