This is a interview with Iqra (@in) on her win on Food story contest! "Dropping Tomato Bombs"
The contest was to write about, with, or featuring food!
How Iqra feels winning this contest?
"I feel really happy! I wrote it on a whim after watching a lot of spoken word poetry and I wanted to write something like that, only adapted to Commaful.
I realised later that there was a food contest and that it related to it, so I entered it! Honestly, I didn't feel I was going to win, but it's definitely given me a push to writing more spoken word-like poetry!"
What inspired her to write this book/post/poem/story?
"Spoken word poetry was my first inspiration. That day I spent hours watching Youtube videos about people performing and I got inspired! But the underlying theme in that poem is racism and trying to combat it."
Insight on her book/post/poem/story
"The character was essentially based on my grandma who has felt backlash from my country because of the colour of her skin. I felt it was important to talk about issues and small stories like this that often go untold.
I am a huge advocate for speaking about experiences and often find them inspiring my poetry. Plus, food brings my family together, so I guess you could say that it plays a huge part in our life. :) "
Her words regarding Commaful in general
"Commaful is pretty much what inspired and gave me the confidence to start writing more. When I first started posting, I was a frustrated teenager who felt as if her voice wasn't getting heard.
Fast forward 1-2 years, I am still a teenager, (big shock, I know) but I feel as if I have space to put my thoughts and I know that the people here would comfort and try to understand what I feel, like they do to everyone else. The community is what makes Commaful, Commaful."
Her words regarding the Commaful contests
"I really like the contests! I think they're a great form of inspiration, if you're feeling particularly stuck one day and need to write something. Also, I like how they're always varied and showcase a lot of talent. :)"
Congratulation on your winning, Iqra!
Congratulation on your winning, Iqra! I have read the poem, it described well of the situation and discrimination your grandmother has faced.
