Never had I thought the very last sights I’d see

Never

Never had I thought

the very last sights I’d see

would be that of the rain

dripping down the sleeve of a tree;

settling upon my skin,

as if I were a bed of forgotten leaves,

or a needle of pine

plucked fruitlessly by a passerby.

How strange it is to watch

the forest weep for me,

as if I were its youngest,

and the greatest shame of my youth

was to have my mother

bury my body

centuries before her own.

But there is comfort

in the forest cradling my broken knees.

There is warmth

in the way it holds me like I should have been held all my years -

All my little years.

And it’s a strange power

all woods seem to hold,

to always know

what us little humans

need most.
