The spell was broken. Her true prince emerged from sparks and lights, alive and more handsome than she would have ever imagined. They were married soon after and though at times he behaved...
beastly, she reasoned it was hard for him to adjust to being human again after so many years.
He still raged at times, still roared, though now with a human mouth. She loved him and knew that a spell couldn't fix everything.
A spell could not change a persons soul, no matter the lesson intended. In fact, she worried the spell had made him worse. The servants were not willing to confirm this, but their eyes said enough.
Even still, when she discovered she was expecting, she was overjoyed.
"So soon!" The servants cried joking and joyful, and Belle smiled at Adam's prideful eyes, the lopsided grin pulling at his lips.
Born bald and squalling, the young Prince Maurice was adored. His father's rages slipped into the past and Belle hoped the beastliness was behind them.
Soon the prince began to grow hair, dark and thick and shining. As his features grow more distinguished, more human, his chin becomes more and more like his fathers.
Lumiere was first to understand, to recognize. His eyes meet Belle's with a sadness she expected, but a grimness she had not.
His voice was ominous and solemn when he speaks, unreasonable darkness in his eyes.
"King Adam must never know."
Belle assumes his fear and pain is for his King, and she dismisses the words. Rage or no, Adam loves baby Maurice and he loves his wife. Besides, Gaston is dead.
Regardless, she oddly finds herself keeping Adam from being alone with the baby.
It isn't until she wakes one night, a sudden silence in her ears where an infant had previously screamed, that she remembered what beasts did to children that weren't their own.
