I hate it when the neighbor's dogs start howling. It seems like it happens every. single. night. We haven't had a night free of the howling in over two weeks now.
There are at least 3 of them there, too, so the whole neighborhood can hear them. The sound comes without warning or preamble.
One minute you're washing the dishes, laying in bed, or watching TV. Then all of a sudden it starts. Sometimes it is just one at first, but inevitably the rest join in.
Tonight, I had just finished brushing my teeth when they started up. I walked out of the bathroom, walked to the kitchen, and reached for the shotgun on top of the fridge.
I grabbed some extra shells out of a drawer and headed for the back door. Standing there, you can really hear the howling clearly.
It's good to know that the rest of the neighbors can hear the warning; we always have plenty of backup.
I think the one thing I fear more than the creatures, is that one night they will get wise to our little alarm system, and we won't hear the dogs howl ever again.
