The Adam Pod

by thegrinchwhostoleyou

My radio was broken, so there was no way of knowing which quadrant I was in, and the jungle was thick in all directions.

“Strange to see an Adam Pod this far out in the weeds,” I called to the man inside lying against the curved wall of the capsule, “And this late into the expedition”.

I gave a few knocks and the pale man stirred to attention.

I was just coming to terms with the fact I would most likely die and become just another unfortunate name in the Hall of Pioneers, lost in pursuit of understanding, discovery, and profit,

when I caught the glint of the stasis module at the bottom of the ravine.

“Thank goodness you found me…” croaked the man inside, nearly a skeleton.

“Yeah, don’t mention it.

Bad news for you is we already established an outpost in this sector, about twenty or some odd months ago, so you won’t be getting the glory… But if I can get this console to work,

” I pried the external override loose, “then at least you’ll still have your life.” Though I doubted that. “Say, you wouldn’t happen to remember your authorization code, would you?”

“Thank … goodness…” Almost a mumble.

“You know what? You sit tight, I’ll handle this.” The man was a husk, delirious due to a lack of nutrient ether inside the pod, if there was any left.

I typed in the most recent code for seed colonists.

INVALID CODE. PLEASE RE-INITIATE

Huh, must have been before the third wave. From the condition of the pod, he could have been here for some time, years even. I typed in the next most recent.

INVALID CODE. PLEASE RE-INITIATE

“Sorry this is taking so long, I’m still a little disappointed this wasn’t an Eve Pod, if you catch my drift,” I joked.

INVALID CODE. PLEASE —

A crash from inside the pod just in front of my visor caused me to jump back and let out a shriek. “What the —”

I looked at the frail man inside the chamber. His fingers had already started to rot, and near the far corner, a small hole where something bored in from the outside. “… You found… me…” he moaned.

This time the man’s mouth didn’t follow the words.

"Nice try," I said. The creature let its host’s mouth droop lower, not willing to expend the energy now that the ruse was up.

The dead man’s eyes rolled back and fervent chittering erupted from the hollow of his skull.

Like lightning, the albino proboscis struck the glass in front of my face three more times in quick succession,

its two fangs shuddering as it creeped back into the slit where his Adam’s apple should have been.

“I may die out here,” I grabbed my pack,”but not like that.

” Light was fading fast when I resumed my ill-fated trek, hoping the next surveyor wouldn’t be as dumb as I was, or worse — quicker with the release code.
