My roommate works night shifts. I rarely see him, because when I get up to go to work, he's still at work. When he gets up to go to work, I'm asleep. When I get home from work, he's asleep.
When he gets home from work, I'm still at work. Outside of weekends, we only communicate via text.
We don't socialise much, so he came up with an idea for something we could do. We put a chess set on the coffee table.
He made the first move, and the plan was that when I got up in the morning, I would see his move and then make mine. When he got up in the evening, he'd see my move and then make his, and so on.
Even though we didn't see each other during the game, it was quite fun.
After about a month, he made a few very good moves and gained the upper hand. One morning I woke up to find that he'd checkmated me.
I pulled out my phone to text him congratulations, and I saw he'd sent a text to me a few days earlier, which I hadn't noticed for some reason.
"Hey man, I'm going to be out of town for a week, so our chess game will be on hold until I get back."
